Vaughan is a partner of the biotechnology team at Pizzeys. After completion of his combined science and laws undergraduate degrees, including first class honours for research in the hormonal regulation of milk protein gene expression, Vaughan worked as a research associate for the United States-based pharmaceutical company, Fort Dodge (formerly American Cyanamid Company), a subsidiary of American Home Products. Utilising his Bachelor of Laws, For the next 5 years, Vaughan then worked as a graduate lawyer for the Department of Defence, and then as a trade marks lawyer in a Sydney based firm with Spruson & Ferguson. Following his technical interests in biotechnology, Vaughan then returned to his technical studies and completed a PhD in molecular immunology at the John Curtin School of Medical Research through the Australian National University and then worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the University.

Vaughan brings advanced technical and legal ability to the Pizzeys team and has utilised his skills to assist a diverse array of local and foreign clients, both corporate and government, in a wide range of intellectual property matters. His in-house experience ensures that he is sensitive to the needs and expectations of his clients, and is aware of issues facing researchers and in-house teams. Vaughan has significant experience in drafting specifications, prosecuting applications both in Australia and New Zealand, as well as in foreign jurisdictions, undertaking strategic IP due diligence and auditing, and providing infringement and patentability advice.

Particular technical fields in which Vaughan has specific a depth of experience include genetics, pharmaceuticals, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and immunology. Vaughan has also developed particular expertise on the patentability of in the areas of cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes and auto-immune therapies, including both small molecules and antibody therapies, as well as diagnostics, molecular tools, nanotechnology and stem cells.
